Why Doesn t Golden Axe 3 Have an Extra Continues Cheat

Similar to the Streets of Rage Collection, all of the achievements in the Golden Axe collection are not obtainable in Xbox Live co-op. This walkthrough assumes you will be playing through each game with the default settings. The games you should be playing are: Golden Axe (English Version), Golden Axe II (North American Version) and Golden Axe III (Japanese Version).

As with all Sega Vintage games, there is a 'save anytime' feature in the game menu. Each game in this collection has twelve save slots. Saving after every battle (and reloading if you've performed poorly) will make each game a breeze. Make sure you press the cn_back button on the credits after finishing each game. This will ensure each game registers that you have completely finished it.

Golden Axe

Press back on the title screen, select help & options, game settings and then select easy difficulty (this will change lives and power meter both to five). On the title screen press cn_LB until you have 9 credits.

Golden Axe II

Select options on title screen and make sure your life meter is set to five. Bear in mind you can't finish the game if you're playing on easy difficulty.

Level Select: At the title screen, hold cn_X+cn_A+cn_B and press cn_start. Still holding cn_X+cn_A+cn_B, highlight options and press cn_start again. Release cn_A+cn_B (keep cn_X held down until after the character select screen) and scroll down, pressing cn_A on 'exit'. Press cn_A again on 1P Play and again on normal game. Select your character and the screen will go black with a 1 in the center if done correctly. Release cn_A and press cn_A until desired stage is selected (1-7). Press cn_start when ready.

Personally, I think that Gilius (the dwarf) is the easiest character to play as but you will also need to play through the game as Tyris for one of the achievements.

Golden Axe III

Make sure the game is set to normal difficulty in the game options to make things easier. Although there is a level select cheat for Golden Axe III, it will not allow you to get the 'true' ending so it's best to avoid using the cheat if you want to get all of the achievements in one playthrough.

Chronos (humanoid panther on left side of character select) has an unblockable dash move that will get you through the whole game. The move is performed by pressing 'cn_right, cn_left, cn_right, cn_A+cn_B '. You can assign cn_Y in the options to do cn_A+cn_B buttons together to make things easier. It may take a few tries to get the timing right but once mastered, this move will devastate every enemy in your path. If you are on a small platform I would suggest jumping and using the down+A attack (especially halfway through stage 1 when you are on the back of a runaway cart).

During the game you will be given a choice of an upper or lower path. Always choose the upper path as this will allow you to ride all the creatures for one of the achievements. The 'true ending' is earned by reaching Stage 7 with a B ranking and without using a continue. I spammed Chronos's dash move and got to the final stage with one life remaining and still had a B rank. In fact, I had a B rank by the end of Stage 5.

Rescue five prisoners to gain an extra life.
